Indian Railways is set to achieve a major milestone in green transportation with the launch of the country’s first hydrogen-powered train. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to flag off the train from Jind railway station in Haryana on July 17, after which commercial operations will begin on the Jind-Sonipat route. The project marks India’s entry into hydrogen-powered rail transport and is part of the government’s broader push towards cleaner and more sustainable mobility.
India’s Green Rail Revolution Begins
The hydrogen-powered train will operate on the 89-kilometre Jind-Sonipat section under Northern Railway. It has undergone extensive testing over the past few months between Jind, Sonipat and New Delhi before receiving approval for commercial operations.
Unlike conventional diesel trains, the new train uses hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity, emitting only water vapour as a by-product. This makes it a zero-emission alternative that can significantly reduce the environmental impact of rail transportation.
Route, Speed And Passenger Capacity
The train will consist of two driving power cars and eight passenger coaches. It has a maximum operating speed of 110 kmph, although trials have been conducted at speeds ranging between 75 kmph and 120 kmph.
Indian Railways plans to operate two round trips every day, covering approximately 356 kilometres daily. The train offers 682 seats and can accommodate around 2,600 passengers, making it suitable for both regular commuters and regional travellers. Maintenance of the train will be carried out at Delhi, while a dedicated hydrogen production and refuelling facility has been established at Jind.

Hydrogen fuel-cell technology is considered one of the most promising alternatives to fossil fuels for rail transport, particularly on routes that are not fully electrified.
