In sub-Reddit dedicated for developers, a user has claimed that Chinese Govt backed hackers have infiltrated the Indian Govt’s Provident Funds website and have access to massive amount of data.
The Reddit user named pasteurusernamehere posted a thread, in which he claimed that hackers supported by Chinese Govt have hacked into EPFO website, and have stolen tons of data belonging to EPFO account holders.
In the same thread on Reddit, this user also shared Github links where the hackers are showcasing these data, and most probably, trying to sell them too.
This development has been tweeted by some users as well.
As per the comments posted on this Reddit thread, this data can be used by Chinese Govt authorities to launch targeted advertisements, to influence Indians, and maybe, Indian Elections.
In a separate comment, a user has shared tweets by expert cyber security experts, where it’s mentioned that Chinese hackers have access to tremendous amount of citizen data, from other countries as well.
We haven’t been able to confirm these developments. More details are awaited.
In 2028 as well, LiveMint reported that Chinese hackers have stolen EPFO data, and as a result, a website was shut down. As per the story on LiveMint, “The data theft came to light on Wednesday after a letter written by Central Provident Fund Commissioner (CPFC) V.P Joy to Dinesh Tyagi, chief executive officer at Common Service Centre (CSC), the body which managed the EPFO website with the data, surfaced on Twitter.”
