The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has introduced stricter food safety measures for festivals, weddings and large community food events, making prior permission mandatory for several occasions where food is prepared and served on a large scale.
The new framework, introduced under FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, is aimed at preventing food adulteration and unsafe food handling during periods when demand for food products rises sharply.
FDA Permission Now Required
Organisers of events such as Iftar gatherings, Bhandaras, Langars, Mahaprasad programmes and marriage functions will have to seek permission from their local FDA office before distributing food.
The application will require details including the caterer, ingredients and raw materials being used. Food distribution at such events will have to be handled through a licensed caterer.
The objective is to ensure that authorities know where the food is being prepared, who is responsible for it and what ingredients are entering the supply chain.
Year-Round Festival Food Safety Calendar
Instead of issuing separate enforcement orders for individual festivals, the Maharashtra FDA has introduced a year-round Festival Enforcement Calendar.
The system covers major celebrations and religious occasions including Ganeshotsav, Holi, Eid, Bakrid, Navratri and Makar Sankranti.
The FDA will identify food products considered particularly vulnerable to adulteration during each festival and conduct targeted inspections and sampling.
Four-Stage Inspection System
The new approach involves food-safety action before, during and after major festivals rather than relying only on inspections once an event is underway.
Officials will inspect locations where food is prepared or distributed on a mass scale, including community feasts. The focus will be on hygiene, food quality, licensing, storage and possible adulteration.
The department has also indicated that enforcement action will be pursued quickly when violations are detected. Inspectors are expected to recommend prosecution against offenders within 14 days after the relevant event or festival concludes.
Why Festivals Are a Focus
Food demand can increase substantially during festivals, weddings and religious gatherings. The FDA believes this creates greater opportunities for adulterated or substandard ingredients to enter the supply chain.
Products such as milk and dairy products, sweets, edible oils and other festival-specific foods are therefore expected to receive greater scrutiny.
The initiative represents a shift towards preventive food-safety enforcement rather than waiting for complaints or food-poisoning incidents.
Stricter Checks Across Maharashtra
The FDA’s new system is intended to operate across the state and cover celebrations regardless of religion or region.
The broader objective is to make food-safety monitoring a continuous process throughout the year, while giving special attention to periods when large numbers of people consume food prepared outside their homes.
