India has officially launched E85 fuel in Delhi at ₹82.12 per litre, making it ₹20 cheaper than regular E20 petrol. The new fuel contains 85% ethanol and 15% petrol and is being introduced as part of the government’s push towards cleaner mobility, lower crude oil imports, and greater use of domestically produced biofuels.

E85 Fuel Launched At ₹82.12/Litre: Rs 20 Cheaper Than Petrol

Delhi Gets Its First E85 Fuel Station

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri inaugurated Delhi’s first E85 fuel dispensing station at Indian Oil’s Pusa Road outlet on World Environment Day. The fuel is now available for immediate purchase by compatible vehicles.

E85 has been priced at ₹82.12 per litre in Delhi, compared to ₹102.12 per litre for regular E20 petrol, giving consumers a direct saving of ₹20 per litre.

What Is E85 Fuel?

E85 is a high-ethanol fuel blend consisting of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. It is specifically designed for Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFVs), which can operate on higher ethanol concentrations without engine modifications.

The move is aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imported crude oil, lowering emissions, and boosting demand for ethanol produced from agricultural feedstocks such as sugarcane.

Why Is E85 Cheaper Than Petrol?

The government has deliberately priced E85 at a discount to encourage adoption. According to the Petroleum Ministry, the ₹20-per-litre price advantage is intended to offset the lower energy content of ethanol compared to conventional petrol.

However, the lower price does not automatically translate into lower running costs for all users.

The Catch: Lower Fuel Efficiency

While E85 is cheaper at the pump, ethanol contains less energy than petrol. As a result, vehicles running on E85 are expected to deliver lower fuel efficiency.

Industry estimates suggest E85-compatible vehicles may consume 25-35% more fuel compared to similar vehicles running on E20 petrol. In addition, flex-fuel vehicles typically cost more than their standard petrol counterparts.

Expansion Plans Already Underway

The government plans to initially roll out E85 through 50-100 fuel stations across Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. The network is expected to expand to around 500 dispensing stations by the end of 2026 and approximately 5,000 stations across major cities by the end of 2027.

Who Can Use E85?

Not every petrol vehicle can run on E85. The fuel is currently intended only for Flex Fuel Vehicles specifically designed to handle ethanol concentrations of up to 85%.

As automakers continue introducing FFVs in India, the availability of E85 could play a key role in shaping the country’s alternative-fuel ecosystem.

Conclusion

The launch of E85 fuel marks another major step in India’s ethanol-blending and energy-independence strategy. While the fuel offers an attractive ₹20-per-litre discount compared to petrol, its benefits will largely depend on the adoption of flex-fuel vehicles and real-world fuel economy. For now, E85 provides consumers with a cleaner and potentially cheaper alternative, while supporting India’s broader sustainability goals.

Summary: India has launched E85 fuel in Delhi at ₹82.12 per litre, making it ₹20 cheaper than regular petrol. Designed for flex-fuel vehicles, E85 contains 85% ethanol and supports the government’s clean-energy goals. However, the fuel delivers lower mileage than petrol. The government plans to expand E85 availability across major cities, with hundreds of fuel stations expected over the next two years.
