As per the new developments from the world of Indian Railways, which sees approx. 2 crore passengers travelling daily on over 10000 trains, there has been always been a concern over the passengers experiencing difficulty sleeping on trains due to concerns about open gates, fearing potential theft of their luggage.
Gate Security Concerns Across Passenger Classes on Indian Railways
Particularly affecting the passengers seated near the gates, this issue is prompts anxiety throughout the journey.
As outlined by the railway manual, closing of these gates shall be the responsibility of the Traveling Ticket Examiner (TT). Failing to do so, passengers can report this matter without hesitation.
Is the scenario same for various passengers including premium, mail, and express trains?
The answer could vary for the premium trains and those with AC class accommodations typically have two gates, one at the main entrance and another where the seating begins.
The gates of these are less frequently opened and closed due to fewer passenger boarding and alighting, providing travellers with peace of mind regarding their belongings.
The same situation is not so good for the passengers with sleeper coaches since they often experience the unease as the gates remain largely open, leaving their luggage vulnerable to potential theft.
Guidelines for TTs on Indian Railways
Out of total of 68,534 coaches, there are only 23,588 AC coaches whereas there are 44946 non-AC sleeper and general coaches constitute 44,946.
Ensuring the security in the coaches where the general populace travels in majority is paramount and hence as per the railway guidelines mandate, the proper opening and closing of gates by the TT would in turn ensure passenger safety.
As per the railway regulations, only when the train arrives at the platform, TTs are required to open the gates only of the side facing the platform when the train arrives, whereas the one that is on the opposite side has to remain close in order to prevent unauthorized boarding.
Additionally, TTs must ensure gates are closed once the train departs and address any passengers found hanging or sitting at the gate by directing them to their seats.
Any negligence by TTs can be reported by the passengers by lodging complaints through various channels.
If TTs fail to provide station-related information during the journey, complaints can be lodged via phone at 139, through SMS to 91-9717680982, or by tweeting service-related grievances to @RailMinIndia. These measures ensure accountability and contribute to a safer and more comfortable train travel experience for all passengers.
