In a positive development for applicants, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is planning to introduce automation to expedite the processing of post-graduation work permits (PGWPs) and extensions for work permits.
This move is a response to the significant backlogs that Canada is currently experiencing in processing PGWP and work permit extensions.

Good News For Canada Work Permit Applicants: IRCC To Introduce Automation For Processing PGWPs
According to the IRCC, they regularly review the automated tools to ensure their proper functioning and alignment with the intended purpose, maintaining consistency with applications that undergo a thorough human review.
The immigration authority clarified that only an IRCC officer has the authority to reject an application; the automated tools do not have the capability to refuse or suggest refusal of applications.
The rationale for implementing automated tools in processing PGWPs, as outlined by the IRCC, is to handle the majority of clerical and repetitive tasks associated with application sorting. This allows officers to concentrate on evaluating applications and making final determinations.
How Does The Automation Process Work?
The tools categorize applications based on criteria established by IRCC officers, derived from legislative and regulatory requirements for the program. Once automation is in place, the system will route files to appropriate officers for further processing based on office capabilities and officer expertise.
Furthermore, the tools include an eligibility function that identifies routine applications for streamlined processing, expediting the workflow.
During application review, these tools assess whether a case is routine and determine an applicant’s eligibility for a work permit extension or PGWP using criteria set by IRCC officers.
Subsequently, the application is forwarded to an officer to verify the applicant’s admissibility to Canada and to make the final decision.
The IRCC mentioned in a statement that applications not automatically approved for eligibility by the tools may still be approved manually following a review by an officer.
