Historic Uranium Export Deal Finalised
Australia has agreed to begin exporting uranium to India for peaceful civilian nuclear energy purposes, ending a long-standing delay in implementing a bilateral agreement first signed more than a decade ago. The administrative arrangement was signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia, alongside talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Boost For India’s Clean Energy Goals
The uranium supply agreement is expected to support India’s ambitious target of expanding its nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047. Access to Australian uranium will help fuel India’s growing fleet of civilian nuclear reactors, enabling the country to generate more low-carbon electricity while reducing its dependence on fossil fuels.
Strict Safeguards For Peaceful Use
Australian uranium exports to India will be subject to international safeguards and will be used exclusively for peaceful civilian nuclear programmes. The arrangement builds upon the existing civil nuclear cooperation framework between the two countries and addresses earlier concerns related to nuclear non-proliferation through established monitoring mechanisms.
Beyond Energy: Defence And Trade Cooperation
The two leaders also agreed to deepen cooperation in defence, maritime security, critical minerals, renewable energy and supply chains. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open and secure Indo-Pacific while pledging to expand strategic collaboration across multiple sectors. They also discussed increasing investment and accelerating economic cooperation between the two nations.
India-Australia Ties Reach New High
India has emerged as one of Australia’s most important strategic and economic partners, with bilateral trade continuing to grow rapidly. The latest agreements reflect the strengthening relationship between the two democracies as they seek closer collaboration in energy security, defence, technology and regional stability.
Summary
Australia has agreed to export uranium to India for peaceful nuclear energy, marking a major milestone in bilateral relations. The deal supports India’s clean energy ambitions while strengthening cooperation in defence, critical minerals, trade and Indo-Pacific security. Both countries described the agreements as another step towards a deeper strategic partnership built on shared economic and geopolitical interests.
