Apple is reportedly planning to launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026, but the development of its first foldable iPad appears to be facing significant delays. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the foldable iPad estimated to cost around $3,000 may not arrive until 2029 or later. The device has been under development for several years, with Apple initially targeting a 2028 release. However, engineering challenges related to its weight, display technology, and overall design have pushed back its potential launch timeline.

Apple’s Foldable iPad Design and Weight Challenges

Apple is collaborating with Samsung Display Co. to create an approximately 18-inch panel for the foldable iPad. This display is designed to reduce the crease often seen in other foldable screens, following the same approach Apple plans for its foldable iPhone. Interestingly, the foldable iPad is expected to be less complex than the foldable iPhone. Unlike the phone, the iPad will not feature an external screen when folded. Instead, it will resemble a 13-inch laptop when opened, with the flexible display replacing the traditional keyboard and trackpad area.

One of the major hurdles Apple faces is managing the device’s weight. Gurman reports that the current prototype weighs about 3.5 pounds, making it considerably heavier than the existing iPads, which range between 1 and 1.3 pounds. This could make the device less portable and more like a hybrid between a tablet and a high-end laptop.

Foldable iPad Faces Delays as Apple Focuses on M5 iPad Pro Launch

The news of the delayed foldable iPad comes as Apple prepares to release its new M5 iPad Pro. While the upcoming model offers faster charging and better performance, its design remains largely unchanged from the M4 version. Given its projected cost and weight, the foldable iPad seems positioned closer to a premium MacBook Pro than a traditional iPad. With a potential 2029 release, Apple still has time to refine the design and improve usability before launch.

Summary:

Apple plans to launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026, but its foldable iPad may arrive only by 2029 due to weight, design, and display challenges. Featuring an 18-inch Samsung panel, it resembles a 13-inch laptop when opened. Priced around $3,000, it may function more like a high-end MacBook Pro.
