The tool collects multiple data points from target animals—including voice, body language, behavioural changes, and other biological signals—to analyze emotional states and translate them accordingly. Baidu recently filed a patent with China’s National Intellectual Property Administration for this innovative system, which they believe could enhance emotional communication between humans and animals, improving the efficiency of cross-species interactions.
According to Baidu, while the system shows promise, it remains in the research phase. A company spokesperson acknowledged growing interest but emphasized that it is too early to predict outcomes, highlighting Baidu’s broader goal of applying AI across varied fields. The patent was initially filed in December and made public only recently, as reported by the South China Morning Post.
Past Attempts Fell Short, But Baidu’s AI Offers New Hope for Pet-Human Communication
This isn’t the first attempt to bridge the communication gap between pets and humans. While several apps claim to translate pet sounds into human speech, they often receive poor ratings and are considered simplistic. One notable past effort was the Scandinavian project “No More Woof,” which raised over Rs 18.7 lakh ($22,000) in 2014 for a pet translation device. However, the project was discontinued after three years due to high costs and development challenges.
Baidu’s effort stands out due to its integration of advanced AI and multisensory data, potentially offering a more accurate and emotionally intelligent approach to animal-human communication. Though still in early stages, this initiative could mark a significant leap in understanding our furry companions.
