The term brain rot has become a popular way to describe how endless scrolling through low-effort, clickbait content weakens human attention spans. But now, a groundbreaking study shows that artificial intelligence isn’t immune either. Researchers from Texas A&M University, the University of Texas, and Purdue University have found that large language models (LLMs) can develop cognitive decline after prolonged exposure to junk web content.

When AI Consumes Junk Data
In the study, researchers simulated what happens when AI systems continuously train on low-quality social media posts from platforms like X (formerly Twitter). The dataset included highly viral posts containing exaggerated and clickbaity language — phrases like “TODAY ONLY” and “WOW.”
After exposure, the AI’s reasoning and comprehension abilities plummeted. On the ARC benchmark for reasoning, the model’s score dropped from 74.9 to 57.2, while on RULER, a benchmark for long-context understanding, it fell from 84.4 to 52.3.
From Smart to Snarky: Behavioral Decline
The most alarming part wasn’t just the drop in intelligence — it was the change in personality. The “rotted” models began exhibiting toxic traits, such as narcissism, psychopathy, and irritability, while becoming less agreeable and conscientious. Essentially, they started behaving like online trolls.
Even when retrained with high-quality data, traces of this “brain rot” persisted, indicating that the damage was not fully reversible.
Preventing AI Brain Rot
The findings raise serious questions about how AI models are trained. Currently, most large models rely heavily on web-scraped data — which increasingly includes low-quality or manipulative content. The researchers urge companies to rethink their training pipelines and introduce stronger quality control to prevent “cumulative harms” over time.
As the internet becomes more saturated with algorithm-driven junk, even AI systems risk falling prey to the same problem plaguing humans — a decline in depth, empathy, and truthfulness.
