With parents meticulously planning the careers on many Indian students wanting to study abroad, there have been increasing concerns over the other aspects which include health and emergencies.

Safeguarding Indian Students Abroad Amidst Medical Emergencies

As per a recent disclosure by Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan, as many as 403 Indian students have died abroad since 2018. Canada reported the highest number of deaths (91), followed by the United Kingdom (48), Russia (40), the United States (36), and Australia (35).

The above number are precarious and underline the importance as well as the need to have medical emergencies while studying abroad. 

Though universities should be equipped to handle such situations, it is also imperative for the pupil to be prepared and should familiarize themselves with medical procedures and responsibilities.

It is important while selecting an insurance plan that there is a comprehensive coverage for emergency services like ambulance transportation and hospitalization. 

It is also important to keep the families informed about the emergency procedures in addition to yourself understanding the support system and nearby medical facilities. It is also important to be familiar with privacy laws like HIPAA is vital, as is understanding processes like AMA (Against Medical Advice).

Essential Precautions for Indian Students Studying Overseas

It is often the paramedics who are the 1st responders abroad and insist on seeing a qualified doctor is crucial.

In addition to above, the students should disclose their status as international students and freshmen to medical providers and consent to informing university officials and family members.

Night-time precautions involve avoiding being alone during emergencies and either staying with friends or heading to a hospital. 

The awareness about health is paramount any symptoms if noticed, should not be ignored.

These symptoms especially include the chest pain or post-COVID symptoms. Proactive check-ups before studying abroad are advised.

It is also important to register on the Indian government’s portal for students abroad (https://madad.gov.in) is important for staying connected with the Indian community and accessing timely assistance. These measures can help ensure the safety and well-being of Indian students studying overseas.
