India’s Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project has crossed a major construction milestone, with 62.16% of the overall physical work completed, according to an RTI response from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited.
The 508-km high-speed rail corridor connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad has also completed its land acquisition process, removing one of the major hurdles that had affected the project in its earlier years.
62.16% Of Project Work Completed
The latest RTI response, dated September 21, shows that the project had achieved 62.16% physical progress.
Foundation work has been completed across 459.90 km, while piers have been completed along 455.10 km of the route.
Around 380 km of girders have been cast, with girders already erected along 366 km of the viaduct.
All 1,389 Hectares Of Land Acquired
The entire land requirement for the project has now been fulfilled.
A total of 1,389.49 hectares has been acquired for the 508-km corridor.
Of this, 959.04 hectares is in Gujarat and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, while 430.45 hectares is in Maharashtra.
Land acquisition in Maharashtra had previously been one of the key factors affecting the project’s progress.
Mumbai Section Still Under Construction
Construction activity is continuing across Maharashtra, particularly around the Mumbai end of the corridor.
While foundation and superstructure work has been completed at all stations in Gujarat, finishing activities are currently underway.
Station construction is still progressing at locations in Maharashtra, including the stations planned at Thane, Virar and Boisar.
The underground station at Bandra Kurla Complex is also part of the Mumbai section.
21-Km Tunnel Includes Undersea Section
One of the most challenging components of the project is the approximately 21-km tunnel between the Mumbai and Thane areas.
This includes a 7-km undersea section.
Tunnel boring machine work is currently underway, while 4.88 km of tunnel constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method has already been completed.
Excavation has also broken through at four of the project’s eight mountain tunnels.
Track Work Has Also Started
Track-related construction is progressing alongside the civil works.
As of August 27, track slabs had been laid across 97 route kilometres, including CAM injection work.
The project also includes extensive electrical and signalling infrastructure that will be required before high-speed train operations can begin.
First Indian-Made Trainset Under Construction
The first trainset for the corridor is now under construction in India.
Integral Coach Factory in Chennai has awarded BEML an order to design, manufacture and commission two high-speed trainsets for the project.
Construction of the first trainset has already started.
Completion Date Still Not Finalised
Despite more than 62% physical progress, the exact completion date of the entire Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project has not yet been finalised.
NHSRCL has said that the anticipated completion timeline can be determined only after all contract packages are awarded and the required trainsets are supplied.
The project will eventually connect Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.
