December 15th: The New Deadline
Now, the new deadline for implementing FASTags for all the vehicles is December 15h.
Earlier, the deadline was December 1st.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement, “To facilitate sufficient lead time to citizens to obtain FASTag, it has now been decided that all the lanes in the Fee plazas shall be declared as ”FASTag lane of Fee Plaza” by December 15, 2019,”
FASTag Implementation: Update As Of Now
As of now, more than 70 lakh FASTags have been sold by vehicle owners, and on November 26th, maximum number of 1,35,583 tags were sold, across all platforms.
The Ministry informed that 100% of all 537 toll plazas have been converted to FASTag system, and they can now scan the vehicles on the go, without stopping.
In 17 toll plazas, handheld devices too have been provided, which can quickly scan the FASTag on any vehicle. In other toll plazas, the FASTag scanner is present near the boom-barrier.
Pay Double Toll Tax If There Is No FASTag
The Govt. has made it mandatory to create one lane in every toll plaza, for non-FASTag holder vehicle.
In case any vehicle doesn’t have FASTag, then they will need to pay double the toll tax.
This special lane is called Hybrid lane.
Nitin Gadkari, the Road Transport and Highways Minister had earlier stated, “Double the toll amount will be charged from December 1 for travelling through FASTag lanes without tags on 537 toll plazas on national highways across India,”
Free FASTags Till December 1st
However, the facility of free FASTag distribution by NHAI across all toll plazas will expire on December 1st.
Hence, today (November 30th) is the last date for getting free FASTag from all toll plazas and RTO offices.
Some private entities too are offering free FASTags, and it is expected that their deadline can be extended, since December 15th is the new deadline.
We will keep you updated, as more details come in.
