Can This App Steal Money From Your Bank Account? AnyDesk Reacts To RBI’s Warning
There are other apps as well, which can steal money from your bank account
Last month, Reserve Bank of India had issued a warning to all users against using an app called AnyDesk, which was used by fraudsters to steal money from bank accounts.
RBI had advised everyone to immediately uninstall AnyDesk app from their mobile and not use it on the desktop.
AnyDesk has now responded to this warning.
Can this app really steal money from your bank account?
AnyDesk Reacts To RBI Warning
In a statement, AnyDesk has informed that if users don’t take their security seriously, then any app can be used to steal money from your bank account. Or even social media.
Indirectly, AnyDesk has countered RBI’s specific warning against their app, and have advised everyone to secure their systems.
The statement said, “We would like to urge users to exercise the same level of caution that they do with their banking and personal data or their email or Facebook login information.”
At the same time, AnyDesk regretted that scamsters have used their app to steal money from their bank accounts, but at the same time, they said that their software is used legitimately by millions of users to grant access or take access of remote desktops.
They said, “AnyDesk has been engineered in Germany and has a reputation of being an exceptional remote access software used by millions to legitimately connect to devices around the world.”
The statement says that if users share their passwords with anyone, without realizing the implications of the same, then such frauds can happen anywhere, with anyone. Hence, indirectly, AnyDesk has made it clear that it’s not necessarily that their software is responsible for these frauds.
It is users’ casual approach towards security which is the culprit.
AnyDesk said in their statement, “AnyDesk was abused by individuals to steal from users who did not understand the need to keep their access codes as safe as they do their personal data.”
What is AnyDesk?
AnyDesk is a software which is used to take remote access of any desktop. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD, and the access of any computer can taken from any mobile device as well as a desktop/laptop. It supports Android as well as iOS.
It was founded in 2014, and made by AnyDesk Software GmbH.
Although it uses full encryption, the software grants full permission to the person who takes access of remote computer; and once the passcode has been shared, there is no looking back.
This is the reason a lot of malicious attacks on unattended computers having AnyDesk access has been reported (as per Wiki)
RBI’s Warning Against AnyDesk
Last month, in an unprecedented move, RBI had issued a warning against AnyDesk app, and had warned users that this app can wipe out your bank account.
Users are strongly advised to uninstall any version of AnyDesk app, and never download it or use it.
Experts have told that there several apps which seem similar to AnyDesk, which have been used by scamsters to fraud people.
The scamster asks for the passcode which grants remote access to any computer, and then uses that access to scoop out bank account details and even OTP of the transaction, and then steals money.
