Huawei P20 and P20 Pro Launched! World’s First Triple Camera System Powered By AI!
The Huawei P20 Pro sports a Leica triple camera system with the highest total pixel count on a smartphone available in the market.
Today is a day of some big launched in the smartphone world. After the launch of the Mi MIX 2S earlier in the day, Huawei unveiled their latest pair of much-anticipated flagship smartphones, the Huawei P20 and the Huawei P20 Pro. They were unveiled at a special launch event today, held at the iconic Grand Palais in Paris.
As with the previous P series smartphones, the main focus of these two smartphones is photography. This is evident by the presence of a triple-camera system on the Huawei P20 Pro, the first in the world. The cameras on both the smartphones are ably assisted by AI which identifies more than 500 different shooting scenarios under 19 categories and automatically selects the best photography modes and camera settings to deliver incredible, professional-looking images.
And Huawei didn’t just stop at that. They also unveiled the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS in collaboration with Porsche Design. Their signature brand aesthetic gets together with Huawei’s mobile engineering expertise to set a new standard in luxury smartphones.
It’s All About The Camera
The P series is all about the camera. Huawei has a long-standing collaboration with Leica to combine the best of photography with some of the best hardware available. At the launch event, Huawei’s CEO, Richard Yu said,
“We look for inspiration from artists to continuously evolve our approach to design and innovation. The HUAWEI P20 Series builds on the legacy of our collaboration with Leica. With a breakthrough triple camera on the HUAWEI P20 Pro, an advanced dual camera on the HUAWEI P20, and powerful artificial intelligence on both, today’s most vibrant consumers can capture and share the brilliance of the world around them.”
Huawei is saying that the P20 series will make capturing professional quality images a truly effortless experience for everyone.
The Huawei P20 Pro sports a Leica triple camera system with the highest total pixel count on a smartphone available in the market. The system is made up of a 40MP RGB sensor, a 20MP monochrome sensor and an 8MP sensor with a telephoto lens. It also features a colour temperature sensor for better colour reproduction in the captured images.
It also has f/1.8, f/1.6 and f/2.4 wide aperture to capture clear detailed images. The Huwaei P20 Pro also includes a brand new Leica 3x telephoto (VARIO-SUMMILUX-H 1:1.6-2.4/27-80ASPH) lens for long-range photography with up to 5x Hybrid Zoom. The Huawei P20 Pro’s highly sensitive image sensor enables capturing images up to ISO 102,400.
The Huawei P20 features a Leica dual camera system featuring a 12MP lens with 1.55 ?m pixels and a 20MP monochrome sensors which enable some serious low-light photography.
Both these smartphones support six-axis stabilisation. They can capture slow-motion footage at 960fps for super-slow-motion videos. Another highlight in the photography department is AI. It enables AI-Assisted Composition, providing intelligent suggestions to frame group shots and landscapes.
The 24MP selfie camera on both these smartphones comes with AI beautification and 3D portrait lighting which makes for beautiful selfies with accurate skin tone adjustments and realistic 3D feature enhancements.
Huawei has partnered with Google to enable the P20 Series to support Google ARCore for advanced AR capabilities.
Key Features Of The Huawei P20 Series
The Huawei P20 Series strikes a balance between good looks and top-notch hardware specifications. The P20 twins are available in a variety of colours with several layers of NCVM optical coatings underneath the glass back. It refracts the light hitting the surface and creates a gradual change of hues.
These are some of the key features of the Huawei P20 series ;

Both the smartphones run the same chipset. The Huawei P20 sports a 5.8-inch LCD FullView display with a resolution of 2240 x 1080 pixels while the Huawei P20 Pro gets a 6.1-inch OLED FullView display with the same resolution.
The P20 series is available in four colours;
- Twilight
- Pink Gold
- Midnight Blue
- Black
The Huawei P20 is available in 4GB RAM + 128GB Storage variant and the Huawei P20 Pro is available in 6GB RAM + 128 GB Storage variant.
The Huawei P20 is IP53 certified while the Huawei P20 Pro has a higher IP67 rating of water and dust resistance.
Huawei’s Collaboration with Porsche Design
Huawei has collaborated with Porsche Design for the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS which is the most advanced phone among the ones released today. It gets the Pro’s triple-camera system along with a super-advanced under-display fingerprint sensor.
The sensor is innovative in more than one ways as it allows the user to wake up the display just by hovering their finger over it. It also features a second fingerprint scanner at the back which can be used to access the secure area of the phone.
This is the first smartphone in the world equipped with a microcapsule PCM which is an aerospace cooling technology for maintaining an optimum operating temperature. It sports a curved 6-inch 2K OLED display. It is available in two colours, Red and Black, and two hardware configurations;
- 6GB RAM + 256GB Storage
- 6GB RAM + 512GB Storage
Just like the P20 Pro, the Mate RS has a 4,000mAh battery which is powered by Huawei’s SuerCharge technology and features AI-powered battery management. It is also the first Huawei smartphone to enable quick wireless charging.
Huawei says that all these smartphones will be available immediately all over. There is no word on India pricing or availability yet.
