India Now Has 1.2 Billion Telecom Users – 5 Interesting Facts From The Recent TRAI Report!
If you need to define what exactly a telecom revolution is, then this fact can help you a bit: India has 1.3 billion population, as per 2015 data.
And out of that, 1.2 billion or 92% of the population, is now a telecom user.
Telecom Authority of India (TRAI) has just come up with their detailed telecom report, and this telecom revolution news was shared in that report.
As per the data shared by TRAI, as on May 31, 2017, there are a total of 1204.98 million telecom users in India, out of which 1180.80 million or 1.1 billion are wireless users, and 24.16 million are wireline users.
If we talk about monthly expansion, then wireless user base is expanding at a healthy rate of 0.17%, with May witnessing 1.17 million new users.
On the same hand, wireline user base is dying and vanishing fast. With -0.50% monthly growth rate, wireline user-base witnessed paltry 0.10 million new users in the month of May.

1) Reliance Jio Triggers Fastest Growth
In the month of May, Reliance Jio added 4.78 million new users, which is the fastest growth witnessed by any telecom service provider in India. Bharti Airtel was way behind in the second slot, with 2.09 million new users.
BSNL with 1.3 million new users came at #3, while Vodafone with 1.1 million new users is at #4. Idea is at #5 with just 1.9 lakh new users.
2) Idea Cellular Users Are Most Active
Active wireless users, also called as VLR subscribers for any telecom network is an important data, which signifies the usage pattern.
For the month of May, Idea registered maximum VLR of 101.7%, which means Idea users were most active in this period. Now, VLR becomes more than the number of users on Idea because of a large proportion of in-roamers on their network.
Airtel was at #2 position, with 95.6% VLR subscribers, which is way more than 75.7% VLR registered by Reliance Jio.
3) Private Players Ruling The Market
The report categorically stated that despite having Govt. backup, state-run telecom service providers BSNL and MTNL continued their dismal run. 90.96% of the telecom market is captured by private players, and PSU based telcos are holding just 9.04% share.
Bharti Airtel is still at #1 position with 23.59% share, while Vodafone is at #2 with 17.86% share. Idea is at #3 with 16.62% share.
Reliance Jio has come up strongly to become #4 biggest player with 9.94% share.
4) Delhi Has Maximum Telecom Penetration
Pan-India, New Delhi registered maximum telecom penetration of 260.32%.
Himachal Pradesh came at #2 with 149.58%, while Tamil Nadu is at #3 position with 128.07% penetration.
Bihar has the worst telecom penetration with 61.68%, followed by Madhya Pradesh at 67.57%.
5) Mobile Number Portability Increases
During the month of May, a total of 5.37 million MNP requests were received by various telcos. With this, a total of 283.09 million MNP requests have been received till date, ever since MNP was introduced in 2010.
North and Western zones received maximum MNP requests; within which Rajasthan took #1 position with 23.82 million MNP requests, followed by Gujarat at 20.28 million requests.
