Facebook Now Has 2 Billion Users – Almost A Third Of Entire Humanity Is Now Using Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg personally came out yesterday night, and made a very important announcement – Facebook now has 2 billion users on their platform.

The World has 7 billion people as of now, and out of that, if 2 billion are using Facebook, then it means that almost a third or 28% of entire humanity is right now on one single platform.

This is certainly big, and massive because no other Internet platform/portal/website or app has claimed this reach, ever.

In a short Facebook post, Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook said, “As of this morning, the Facebook community is now officially 2 billion people!

We’re making progress connecting the world, and now let’s bring the world closer together. It’s an honour to be on this journey with you.”

This needs to be compared with a news item which was published in a small magazine called The Harvard Crimson, as of February 9, 2004, which said, “As of yesterday afternoon, Zuckerberg said over 650 students had registered [to] use thefacebook.com. He said that he anticipated that 900 students would have joined the site by this morning.”

Facebook has certainly come a long way since then.

New Focus Of Facebook: Communities

In a blog post published on the occasion, by Mike Nowak, Product Director and Guillermo Spiller, Product Manager, it was revealed that Facebook will now focus extensively on building communities.

This was shared a few days back as well by Zuckerberg when Facebook officially changed their mission statement.

For the past decade, Facebook’s mission had been to “make the world more open and connected.”, which has now changed to “give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.”

Now, in the blog by Facebook product managers, few interesting facts and new products were announced, which clearly showcases the focus on building communities for Facebook users.

• More than a billion people or 50% of overall Facebook users are active on Groups, every month

As per Zuckerberg, it took them 8 years to reach the 1 billion user mark, but the 2nd billion was reached within 5 years.
