Telecom Bloodbath: Airtel Slashes 4G Data Rates By 80%; Offers 14 GB For Rs 145; Sunil Mittal Says They Will Match Every Jio Offer

If you thought that Airtel’s free roaming offer was a revolution, then you made a big mistake – It was just a ceremony to announce the telecom war which has been triggered with Jio’s Prime offer.

And the result is a telecom bloodbath, wherein India’s largest telecom operator has just slashed 4G data rates by massive 80%. We are calling it a war and a bloodbath because, after Airtel, other telecom players will have to lower their data charges, which will result in huge losses for these companies.

But for the end user, this is indeed, one of the best phases of consumerism.

Airtel’s Sizzling Offer: 14 GB for Rs 145

As soon as Jio announced their Prime plans, and the offer of 30 GB for Rs 303 (with 1 GB data cap/day), Airtel went back to the war-room, and in consultancy with Credit Suisse, devised a matching plan which will compel the users to think twice before choosing Jio for their data needs.

Airtel is now offering 14 GB for just Rs 149, which means users will pay only Rs 10.35 per GB of data, which is almost same as Jio’s Rs 303 for 30 GB plan, wherein the user will pay Rs 10.1 per GB plus Rs 99 as a one-time charge.

A month back, Airtel was offering 16 GB for Rs 1199, and the recent offer means that they have slashed 80% of their prices.

The only disadvantage with Airtel is that, the users shall get 0.5 GB data cap per day, compared to Jio, which is offering 1 GB data cap.

Besides, Airtel has also launched Rs 349 plan, which offers unlimited calls to all networks, along with 14 GB per month. Rs 145 plan offers unlimited Airtel to Airtel calls.

Airtel Will Match Every Jio Offer

Airtel Chairman has categorically stated that they will match every Jio plan with equal force and momentum. In a statement, he said, “Tariffs that they (Jio) have announced are still very aggressive, which means you got to respond. You got to do more packages… You have to throw in more data. All those things need to be done,”

However, he also said that Jio’s aggressive tariff plans are unsustainable, and overall, the telecom industry will suffer.

All eyes are now set on April 1st because after that, Jio customers will need to pay for using their services. This shall be the real litmus test for Mukesh Ambani because offering free services to mop-up a massive user base is easy.

As per some reports, Jio may lose up to 50% of their customers once the services are charges, and this can certainly cause some worry for them.

Besides, Airtel is all set with their competitive plans, and Idea-Vodafone; RCom-Aircel and Tata Telecom must be figuring out the market dynamics, right now.
