Flipkart, India’s lighthouse ecommerce platform has had a bumper Big Billion Day sale in 2015. According to a top Flipkart executive, they sold more than $200 million (approx Rs. 1300 Crore) worth of Mobile phones during the five-day Big Billion say sale extravaganza. This is even more impressive given the fact that the sale was conducted only on their app and was not available on their website.
Indian consumers lapped up mobile phones on Flipkart far more than any other product. Infact, mobile phone sales alone accounted for two-thirds of all products sold during Big Billion.
Here is another astonishing number – 250 mobile phones were sold every minute during the 5 day sale of which 190 were 4G phones, Ankit Nagori, Chief Business Officer of Flipkart told ET. He added. “About 80 per cent of sale of mobile phones that happened during Big Billion Days were actually 4G phones. Overall, 80 per cent of the phones sold would be under Rs 10,000 range.”
Mobile phone sales of $200 million this year is 5 times more than last year, when it had clocked sales of around $60 million.
The top selling mobile phones on Flipkart were all 4G phones and the list included – Lenovo K3 Note, Moto G3, Samsung Galaxy J5 and J7.
Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat were the top 5 states when it came to number of 4G smartphones sold.

Social media users went into a tizzy during the 5 day sale – over 250,000 Tweets were shared by users during the 5 day sale. Flipkart released this ad after the Big Billion day was over that gave you a glimpse of what the users said in regards to Big Billion day.
Flipkart App Downloads
As the sale was purely on the app, Flipkart’s mobile app was downloaded in large numbers too – On first day of sale itself, Flipkart mobile app topped the charts on Android play store. Even as of today, Flipkart is 2nd most downloaded shopping app on Play store.
Flipkart Sellers rake huge numbers too
Sellers on Flipkart also witnessed huge success – some of the sellers achieved sales in 5 days equivalent to what they do in the whole year through their offline channels. Over 500 sellers posted sales of over Rs. 10 lakh between Oct 13th to Oct 17th.
While the Big Billion day on Flipkart was a huge hit, it’s competitors – Snapdeal and Amazon also experience some great numbers. Snapdeal witnessed more than 5 million orders on the first day of their 2 day Diwali sale. Amazon did not release any numbers, but by all accounts they too witnessed big numbers!
