Singapore PM Lawrence Wong Gets Major Pay Raise
Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, already the world’s highest-paid prime minister, is set to receive a salary increase of around $1.1 million a year as the city-state revises pay for its political leaders.
Wong’s benchmark annual compensation will rise from S$2.2 million ($1.7 million) to S$3.6 million ($2.8 million). The increase represents a rise of more than 60% in his benchmark package.

Wong Will Donate His Entire Increase
Despite accepting the new compensation framework, Wong said he plans to donate the entire increase in his salary to suitable charitable causes during his term.
The move is likely to help address some of the public sensitivity surrounding the pay hike, although the broader question of whether Singapore’s political leaders should receive such high salaries is expected to remain controversial.
Ministers Will Also Receive Higher Pay
The salary revision extends beyond the prime minister.
The deputy prime minister’s benchmark annual salary will rise from around S$1.87 million to S$3.06 million, while cabinet ministers will receive benchmark packages ranging from approximately S$1.8 million to S$2.88 million, depending on seniority and the responsibilities attached to their portfolios.
However, officials will not immediately move to the new benchmark levels.
Existing political office holders will initially receive a one-time adjustment of up to 9% from October 15, with subsequent changes linked to individual performance and responsibilities.
Singapore’s Salary Model
Singapore’s political pay system is unusual by international standards. The government has historically linked ministerial compensation to private-sector earnings, using the salaries of high-earning citizens as a benchmark.
The framework is intended to ensure that entering politics does not require senior professionals to accept a dramatic financial sacrifice compared with private-sector careers.
The country has also regularly ranked among the world’s least corrupt nations, which Singapore’s leaders cite as evidence that its governance model has delivered results.
A Global Outlier
The revised compensation will leave Singapore’s prime minister far ahead of many other major political leaders.
For comparison, the US president earns $400,000 a year, while the UK prime minister earns roughly $230,000.
The Singapore package therefore remains an extraordinary outlier, even among wealthy countries.
