Wipro’s artificial intelligence initiatives have increased productivity to a level equivalent to the work output of around 20,000 employees, according to the company’s Chief Technology Officer Sandhya Arun.

Wipro's AI Push Frees Capacity Equal To 20,000 Workers: What It Means

However, Wipro has clarified that this does not mean 20,000 employees have been replaced or laid off by AI. The additional capacity has instead been redeployed within the company as Wipro moves towards what it calls a “human-AI operating model”.

20,000 Workers’ Worth Of Productivity

Wipro had around 243,000 employees as of June 2026. Against that workforce, AI-generated productivity equivalent to 20,000 employees represents a significant increase in the amount of work that can potentially be completed with the existing workforce.

The company says employees whose capacity has been freed up are being moved to other projects, trained for new roles or assigned to work alongside AI systems.

In some cases, engineers can also manage multiple AI agents working on different tasks.

AI Is Changing How Wipro Uses Its Employees

Wipro’s approach is not simply about replacing human workers with AI tools.

According to CTO Sandhya Arun, the company is moving towards a model where humans and AI systems work together. An engineer could supervise several AI agents while focusing on more complex technical or business responsibilities.

This changes the role of employees rather than necessarily eliminating the position itself.

The company has also been investing heavily in AI training. More than 100,000 employees have received advanced AI-related training and certifications as Wipro attempts to prepare its workforce for an increasingly AI-driven technology industry.

From Productivity To Business Outcomes

Wipro’s technology leadership says companies should not measure AI success only by how many hours of work can be saved.

Instead, the focus should increasingly be on outcomes such as better customer experiences, new revenue opportunities and improved business performance.

This represents an important shift for India’s IT services industry, where companies have traditionally relied heavily on human engineers and developers to deliver technology services to global clients.

If AI allows the same work to be completed faster, IT companies will need to demonstrate how those productivity gains translate into value for customers.

AI Could Change IT Hiring

The development also comes at a time when artificial intelligence is reshaping hiring across India’s large IT services companies.

Companies are increasingly looking for employees who can work with AI tools, develop AI applications, manage AI agents and help clients integrate the technology into their businesses.

This could result in fewer requirements for some repetitive tasks while increasing demand for specialised technical, consulting and AI-related skills.

The result may therefore be a change in the composition of IT work rather than simply a reduction in the number of technology jobs.

Wipro Is Expanding AI-Focused Roles

Wipro is also expanding its pool of forward-deployed engineers who work closely with clients to accelerate AI adoption.

The company has not disclosed a specific target for this workforce, but its CTO indicated that Wipro’s approach would broadly align with developments at other major Indian IT services companies.

The bigger challenge, according to Wipro, is ensuring that engineers develop the skills required to work effectively with AI systems.

The Bigger Question Is AI Monetisation

While productivity gains can reduce the amount of human effort required to complete certain tasks, the long-term business impact will depend on whether companies can convert those gains into additional revenue, stronger margins and better customer outcomes.

Wipro has not separately disclosed its AI revenue, making it difficult to measure the company’s AI business purely through reported revenue.

For India’s IT industry, however, Wipro’s latest numbers provide another indication of how quickly AI is changing the way software development and technology services are delivered.

The figure of 20,000 is therefore best understood as AI-enabled work capacity rather than 20,000 jobs eliminated.

Summary

Wipro says its AI initiatives have generated productivity equivalent to the work of around 20,000 employees. The company says this capacity has been redeployed rather than resulting in 20,000 job cuts. With more than 100,000 employees receiving advanced AI training, Wipro is moving towards a human-AI operating model where employees work alongside and manage AI systems.
