The renowned IT major Wipro is doing rounds on the news yet again, this time for allegedly ‘trapping’ the placed fresher graduates of the batch of 2022, as the company is now asking them to join at a salary package much lower than the one offered.
In a recent development Wipro has reached out to the fresher graduates of the 2022 passed out batch and offered them to join at a package of Rs 3.5 lakh per annum, while having hired them at a package of Rs 6.5 LPA.
This comes after the IT major has already deferred the onboarding of these candidates by over a period of 6 months.
The Bengaluru-based IT giant hires fresher graduates through two programmes. One of them termed as the ‘Elite’ programme offers a salary package of Rs 3.5 LPA to its employees, while the other one, termed the ‘Turbo’ programme offers the candidates a larger package of Rs 6.5 LPA.
In a recent email sent to the hired graduates, Wipro has reportedly asked candidates hired under the Turbo programme to offer jobs for the Elite one, meaning joining at a much lower salary package than the one offered.
The candidates with a package offer of Rs 6.5 LPA have been waiting to be onboarded since August 2022. They received an email from Wipro on Feb 16, asking to join for the Elite role and send their decision by Feb 20. We have access to the emails.
According to the email, ““Like others in our industry, we continue to assess global economies and customer needs, which factor into our hiring plans. We appreciate your commitment and patience as we try to identify joining opportunities for you.
Employee Union NITES Condemns This Act
Reacting on this development, Harpreet Singh Saluja, President, Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate NITES said,
“Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate NITES strongly condemns Wipro’s unethical move to reduce the salaries of employees awaiting joining from a package of 6.5 lakhs per annum to 3.5 lakhs per annum. The decision to cut the salaries of the employees without prior consultation and negotiation is not only unjust but also goes against the principles of fairness and transparency. It is unacceptable that the burden of the company’s financial troubles is being placed solely on the shoulders of the employees. We demand that the management reconsider its decision and engage in meaningful dialogue with the union to find a mutually beneficial solution. We will not stand by while the rights and dignity of our members are being violated.”
Currently, we have certain Project Engineer roles available for recruitment with an annual compensation of INR 3.5 lakhs. We would like to offer all our Velocity graduates in the FY23 batch an opportunity to opt for these roles.”
Additionally, if a student accepts this offer, their previous offe r of a higher package shall be cancelled.
“However, we cannot commit to a date of joining as our hiring plans are being determined based on prevailing economic environment and evolving customer needs,” the company added.
