WhatsApp is changing the way businesses pay for using its Business Platform, with a new per-message pricing system set to come into effect from October 1.

Whatsapp Will Charge 54 Paisa Per Message For Business Users

The change will affect businesses that use WhatsApp’s Business Platform and API to communicate with customers at scale. Instead of being charged primarily based on conversation categories, businesses will increasingly pay for individual template messages delivered to users.

Businesses Will Pay Per Message

Under the revised system, businesses will be charged when certain template messages are delivered to customers.

Template messages are pre-approved messages that businesses use for notifications, marketing campaigns, reminders, order updates and other customer communications.

The price will depend on the type of message and the recipient’s country.

This means businesses sending large volumes of WhatsApp messages could see their messaging costs change significantly depending on how they structure their campaigns.

Marketing Messages Will Remain The Most Expensive

WhatsApp’s pricing structure continues to distinguish between different types of business communication.

Marketing messages, which include promotions, offers and advertisements, generally carry higher charges than utility messages such as order confirmations, account updates and other transactional notifications.

Authentication messages used for verification and login-related communication are also treated separately.

Businesses will therefore need to pay close attention to how their messages are classified.

Customer Replies Can Still Be Free

The new pricing system does not mean every WhatsApp message exchanged between a business and customer will automatically attract a charge.

When a customer initiates a conversation, businesses can respond within the customer service window without being charged for certain types of messages.

WhatsApp has also retained free messaging in some situations, including certain service interactions and messages delivered through specific entry points.

The exact cost will therefore depend on who initiates the conversation, the type of message being sent and the applicable pricing rules.

Why WhatsApp Is Changing Its Pricing

The shift is part of Meta’s broader effort to turn WhatsApp into a major business communication and commerce platform.

Millions of businesses use WhatsApp to communicate with customers, while the platform has increasingly added tools for advertising, customer support, payments and commerce.

A per-message model gives Meta a more direct way to monetise business communication as companies increasingly use WhatsApp for marketing and customer engagement.

Indian Businesses Could Be Closely Affected

The change is particularly relevant for Indian businesses because WhatsApp is widely used for customer communication across e-commerce, banking, travel, education, restaurants and small businesses.

Companies that send large numbers of promotional or transactional messages will need to monitor their WhatsApp communication costs more closely.

Businesses may also have to rethink automated campaigns, notification frequency and customer-engagement strategies to avoid unnecessary messaging expenses.

Not Every WhatsApp User Will Pay

The new pricing applies to businesses using WhatsApp’s Business Platform and API.

Ordinary users chatting with friends, family or businesses through the regular WhatsApp application will not suddenly be charged for sending messages.

The change is therefore primarily a business-side pricing update rather than a consumer messaging fee.

Summary

WhatsApp is introducing a new per-message pricing model for businesses using its Business Platform from October 1. Charges will depend on message type, destination and applicable pricing rules, with marketing messages generally costing more than utility communications. Customer-initiated conversations can still qualify for free replies under certain conditions. Regular WhatsApp users will not be charged for their personal messages.
