India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) reached a new milestone in October 2026, with the average daily value of transactions crossing ₹1 lakh crore for the first time. UPI processed an average of ₹1,01,707 crore in payments each day, reflecting a rise in digital payment activity during the festive season.

Across the month, UPI recorded transactions worth ₹31.53 lakh crore, while the number of transactions reached 25.47 billion. Both figures set new monthly records, highlighting the growing role of UPI in everyday payments as well as larger purchases.
Daily Payments Rise From September
The average daily transaction value increased from ₹97,913 crore in September to ₹1,01,707 crore in October. Average daily transaction volume also climbed, reaching about 822 million transactions, compared with around 802 million the previous month.
The growth was not simply a result of October having 31 days. The rise in daily averages indicates that payment activity increased on a typical day as well.
Festive Shopping Adds Momentum
October’s festive calendar helped drive the increase. Consumers used UPI for shopping, dining, online purchases and routine payments, with activity rising around major festivals and e-commerce sales.
UPI’s monthly transaction value rose from ₹29.37 lakh crore in September to ₹31.53 lakh crore in October. The number of transactions also increased from 24.07 billion to 25.47 billion.
On a year-on-year basis, transaction volume grew 23 per cent, while transaction value increased 16 per cent. The figures suggest that more people are using UPI and that the platform is also handling a larger total value of payments.
A New Benchmark for Digital Payments
October was the first month in which UPI’s total transaction value crossed ₹30 lakh crore. The previous monthly high was recorded in May 2026, at approximately ₹29.9 lakh crore.
The latest milestone reinforces UPI’s position as a major part of India’s digital payments system. Its continued growth will be closely watched as festive spending continues into November and as discussions around the future cost of merchant digital payments remain in focus.
