Telangana Reports Better Teacher Availability
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has said the state currently maintains a teacher-student ratio of 1:17, significantly better than the 1:30 ratio prescribed under the Right to Education (RTE) framework.
Reddy made the statement during a discussion on education reforms in the Telangana Legislative Assembly on September 11, highlighting teacher recruitment and staffing as key parts of the government’s efforts to improve the quality of education.
Over 10,000 Teachers Recruited
The Chief Minister said that filling teacher vacancies was made a priority after his government took office.
According to Reddy, the government issued notifications for around 11,000 teacher vacancies and completed the recruitment of 10,006 teachers within 55 days, from notification to recruitment.
He said appointment letters were subsequently handed over to the newly recruited teachers at Hyderabad’s LB Stadium.
The government has presented the recruitment drive as an important step towards ensuring that schools have adequate teaching staff and reducing vacancies.
Nearly 29 Lakh Students in Government Institutions
Reddy also provided an overview of Telangana’s government education system.
The state has 28,163 government educational institutions, catering to approximately 28.77 lakh students and employing around 1.57 lakh teaching and non-teaching personnel.
Government schools account for the largest share, with 24,966 schools serving nearly 19.8 lakh students and employing 1,20,455 teachers.
The system also includes government intermediate and degree colleges, polytechnic institutions and residential schools.
Government Says Focus Is on Quality Education
The Chief Minister linked the improved teacher availability to the broader objective of transforming Telangana’s education system.
He has previously urged teachers to cooperate with the government’s education reforms and said the state wants to develop its education system as a model for the country.
The government has also been working on a new education policy, with an emphasis on skills, innovation and improving opportunities for students.
RTE Ratio and Actual Staffing
The RTE framework provides prescribed pupil-teacher ratios for schools, while Telangana’s reported overall ratio of 1:17 indicates substantially more teachers per student than the commonly cited 1:30 benchmark.
The figures, however, represent the overall ratio cited by the Chief Minister. Staffing requirements and prescribed ratios can vary depending on the stage of schooling and applicable norms.
Recent national education data also shows Telangana maintaining relatively low pupil-teacher ratios across different school stages.
A Push to Strengthen Government Schools
The state government has also pointed to rising enrolments in government schools as an indication of improving confidence in the public education system.
Reddy said more than 80,000 additional students had enrolled in government schools over the past two years, attributing the increase partly to the efforts of teachers.
The next challenge will be ensuring that better staffing translates into stronger learning outcomes, infrastructure and skill development.
