India’s largest IT services company, Tata Consultancy Services, has reported a sharp rise in sexual harassment complaints over the past five years, according to its official disclosures. The data comes at a time when the company is already under scrutiny due to the ongoing Nashik harassment case.

TCS Sexual Harrassment Complaints Rise 125% In 5 Years

Complaints Surge From 27 To 125

TCS’s annual reports reveal that complaints increased from 27 cases in FY21 to 125 cases in FY25, marking a 128% rise.

The increase has been gradual but consistent:

  • FY21: 27 cases
  • FY22: 36 cases
  • FY23: 49 cases
  • FY24: 110 cases
  • FY25: 125 cases

This sharp jump, especially after FY23, highlights a significant shift in reporting trends within the organization.

Why Are Complaints Increasing?

The rise in complaints does not necessarily indicate worsening workplace conditions alone. Several factors are contributing:

  • Expanded reporting scope: TCS began including global workforce data under the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR), increasing the total count.
  • Greater awareness: Employees are now more aware of their rights under POSH laws
  • Improved reporting mechanisms: Formal complaint channels are becoming more accessible
  • Cultural shift: More employees are willing to speak up against workplace misconduct

This trend aligns with broader corporate India, where reporting of harassment cases has been rising.

What About Case Resolution?

While complaints have increased, the data also shows fluctuations in pending cases:

  • Pending cases rose from 8 in FY21 to 23 in FY25

Additionally, TCS reported 78 “upheld” cases in FY25, indicating complaints that were found valid after investigation.

However, ambiguity remains around resolution timelines and definitions used in disclosures, raising questions about consistency.

Nashik Case Puts Spotlight On Implementation

The rise in complaints has gained more attention due to the ongoing Nashik controversy, where multiple employees have alleged sexual harassment and misconduct.

Investigations suggest that complaints may have been ignored at the unit level, despite existing POSH mechanisms.

This has sparked a larger debate around how effectively policies are implemented across large, distributed organizations.

A Broader Wake-Up Call For Corporate India

The TCS data reflects a wider shift across Indian workplaces. Increasing complaints may actually indicate greater transparency and trust in reporting systems, rather than just rising incidents.

However, the real challenge lies in:

  • Ensuring timely resolution
  • Strengthening internal complaint committees
  • Building a safer workplace culture

As scrutiny intensifies, companies will need to move beyond policies and focus on consistent execution and accountability.
