Pune Municipal Corporation is exploring a long-pending proposal to construct a road tunnel through Taljai Hill, creating a direct connection between the Sinhagad Road area and Satara Road.
The proposed tunnel is aimed at easing traffic congestion between Hingne Khurd on Sinhagad Road and Sahakarnagar on Satara Road. If implemented, it could provide motorists with an alternative route and reduce both travel time and distance between several busy parts of southern and central Pune.
Tunnel To Connect Hingne Khurd With Sahakarnagar
The proposed tunnel would connect Hingne Khurd on Sinhagad Road with Sahakarnagar on Satara Road by passing through the hill.
The route could improve connectivity between Sinhagad Road, Karvenagar and the areas of Katraj, Dhankawadi, Bibwewadi and Sahakarnagar.
PMC Mayor Manjusha Nagpure has asked civic officials to examine the feasibility of the project, including its technical requirements and other measures needed before construction can be considered.
Traffic Congestion Driving The Proposal
The proposal comes as traffic volumes continue to increase on both Sinhagad Road and Satara Road.
Commuters travelling between Hingne Khurd and Sahakarnagar currently have to use existing road networks, which can become heavily congested during peak hours.
A direct tunnel could create another route between the two corridors and potentially reduce pressure on the existing roads.
The proposal is therefore being considered as part of PMC’s wider effort to create alternative routes across the city.
Road Widening And Culvert Also Proposed
The tunnel is not the only infrastructure proposal being examined in the Hingne-Khorad Vasti area.
PMC is also considering widening an existing road and constructing a culvert over a drain. The civic administration is examining these works along with traffic management, road safety and pedestrian requirements.
Officials will also have to assess how increased traffic generated by a new connection could affect surrounding neighbourhoods.
Three Hill Tunnels Proposed In Pune
The Taljai Hill tunnel is one of three proposed road tunnels through Pune’s hills.
PMC is already examining a tunnel through Vetal Hill connecting Gokhalenagar with Pashan-Panchvati. Another proposed Vetal Hill tunnel would connect Sutardara in Kothrud with Panchvati.
These projects are intended to provide alternative routes and reduce congestion on roads such as Ganeshkhind Road, Senapati Bapat Road, Paud Road and Karve Road.
Toll May Be Needed To Recover Costs
One of the biggest challenges is the cost of constructing tunnels through the hills.
According to civic officials, the projects would be expensive and PMC may need a dedicated revenue source to recover the investment.
The civic body is therefore considering the possibility of charging tolls to four-wheelers using the tunnels.
This means the proposed Taljai tunnel may not necessarily be a free alternative route if the project eventually moves ahead.
Project Is Still At Feasibility Stage
The Taljai Hill tunnel is currently a proposal rather than an approved construction project.
PMC still needs to examine its technical feasibility, environmental implications, cost and funding model before a final decision can be taken.
If the project receives the necessary approvals and funding, it could provide a new east-west connection between Sinhagad Road and Satara Road and potentially reduce travel pressure on existing routes.
For now, Pune residents will have to wait for the feasibility assessment and subsequent decisions before knowing whether the proposed tunnel will actually become a reality.
