Pune has witnessed the phased opening of two Metro rail routes in the past two years, greatly benefiting commuters. In the coming year, further relief is expected with the launch of the Metro service connecting Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar. Originally slated for March 2025, the service is now anticipated to begin by September. The delay in the project was due to election-related restrictions and VIP movement, leading the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to seek an extension for the launch.
Metro Project Progress and Developments in Pune
Officials have been directed by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to expedite the project, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadanavis also set to review its progress. Meanwhile, alongside the Metro work, a flyover is being constructed along the Ganeshkhind Road route.
The Metro line from Shivajinagar will enhance commuting to the Hinjewadi Infotech Park, a key employment hub. Phase 1 of the Pune Metro, which spans 33 km from Vanaz to Ramwadi and Pimpri Chinchwad to Swargate, is already fully operational. In 2024, two stretches were opened to the public, with an intersection at Shivajinagar’s Civil Court.
Expansion Plans and Approvals for Pune Metro
Work is also in progress to extend the operational Metro routes. The 9 km extension from PCMC to Nigdi and Swargate to Katraj is expected to gain momentum in 2025. Additionally, Pune Metro is seeking approval for further route extensions, such as from Ramwadi to Wagholi, Chandni Chowk to Vanaz, and the Khadakwasla to Kharadi line.
Last year, Phase 2 of the Metro project, spanning 113.23 km, received approval from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), along with partial approval from the state government. The proposal has now been forwarded to the Union government for final approval. This phase will feature routes connecting Khadakwasla to Kharadi via Swargate and Hadapsar, as well as a route from Shivajinagar to Loni Kalbhor.
