In Tamil Nadu’s Salem district, a private bank branch reportedly held a woman captive on Wednesday after her husband failed to deposit a loan installment. The woman was released only after her husband paid the installment of Rs 770.
Loan Details
The husband, identified as Selvam, a daily wage earner from Dukiyambalayam, borrowed Rs 35,000 from the bank. He was required to repay Rs 770 weekly for 52 weeks due to financial difficulties.
Confinement at Bank
When Selvam missed this week’s installment, a bank employee, Suba, visited his home but found him absent. Consequently, Selvam’s wife was taken to the bank and confined there until the installment was paid.
Resolution Amidst Protest
Selvam rushed to the bank upon learning about his wife’s situation. Despite his protests, the bank insisted on payment before releasing his wife. Subsequently, he paid the installment in the presence of a police officer and retrieved his wife.
Public Outcry
The incident has sparked public outrage, prompting questions about the bank’s actions and borrower treatment in financial institutions. Customers and the public have strongly condemned the bank’s actions, calling for accountability.
