A potential breakthrough may be emerging in the ongoing US-Iran conflict, as negotiators from both sides have reportedly reached a preliminary understanding to extend the existing ceasefire by 60 days and reopen the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. However, the proposed agreement still requires approval from US President Donald Trump and key Iranian leaders before it can take effect.

What Is In The Proposed Deal?

According to multiple reports, the draft memorandum of understanding (MOU) would extend the current ceasefire for another 60 days while allowing unrestricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes. The extension would give negotiators time to address more difficult issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief.

The proposed framework reportedly includes:

  • Reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for global shipping
  • Extension of the current ceasefire by 60 days
  • Discussions on easing certain US sanctions
  • Talks on Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile
  • Potential release of frozen Iranian assets
  • Continued negotiations toward a broader peace agreement

Why The Strait Of Hormuz Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital energy corridors, handling a significant portion of global oil exports. Disruptions in the waterway during the conflict have triggered volatility in global crude oil markets and raised concerns over energy security worldwide.

A reopening of the route would likely improve global oil supply flows and could help ease pressure on fuel prices internationally. In fact, reports indicate that crude oil prices have already softened amid growing optimism surrounding the proposed agreement.

Trump Yet To Give Final Approval

Despite reports of significant progress, President Trump has not yet endorsed the agreement. US Vice President JD Vance acknowledged that negotiations have advanced considerably but said several language and policy issues remain unresolved.

Trump reportedly remains concerned about Iran’s nuclear activities and is facing pressure from political allies who believe Washington should maintain a tougher stance. Some Republican leaders have criticized any proposal involving sanctions relief or the release of Iranian assets.

Iran has also not formally confirmed the final text, with Iranian-linked sources suggesting that negotiations are still ongoing and certain provisions remain under discussion.

What Happens Next?

Diplomatic sources suggest both sides are closer to an agreement than at any point in recent months. If approved, the 60-day extension could provide a window for broader negotiations aimed at reducing regional tensions and addressing the long-running nuclear dispute.

However, recent military incidents and mutual distrust mean that the situation remains fragile. Until both Washington and Tehran formally sign off on the agreement, the proposed truce remains tentative.
