To fight worsening air pollution, the Delhi government has announced that, from April 1, petrol stations will stop refueling vehicles over 15 years old. The decision, led by Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, aims to cut vehicular emissions and improve air quality across the capital.

How Will It Work?
Fuel pumps will soon be equipped with special devices to identify vehicles that exceed the 15-year age limit. If a vehicle is flagged as too old, petrol will not be sold to it. This move is part of a broader crackdown on outdated vehicles contributing heavily to pollution in Delhi.
More Anti-Pollution Steps Coming
The government isn’t stopping there. Sirsa announced several other key measures:
- Anti-smog guns will become mandatory for high-rise buildings, hotels, and commercial spaces.
- Public transport overhaul: Nearly 90% of Delhi’s CNG bus fleet will be retired by December 2025, replaced with electric buses to support cleaner commuting.
What’s Next?
The Delhi government will formally inform the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to implement the petrol sales ban and ensure compliance at all fuel stations.
The Bigger Picture
With air pollution consistently choking Delhi, these steps reflect a serious shift towards sustainable living. The vehicle fuel ban, combined with a greener public transport system and strict anti-smog regulations, may finally steer the capital towards cleaner skies.
