In a major infrastructure push, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister has announced plans for a third airport in Mumbai. The proposed location is near Vadhvan port, which is expected to become a key economic hub in the coming years. This move aims to enhance connectivity and support the growing air traffic in Mumbai.

Current Status of Mumbai Airports
At present, Mumbai has two major airports:
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) – Located in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), this is one of the busiest airports in India.
- Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) – The second airport, located in Navi Mumbai, is expected to become operational this year. According to Pawar, 85 percent of the construction is complete, and trials have already been conducted.
Vadhvan Port to Become Operational by 2030
Alongside the third airport, the Maharashtra government is focusing on developing Vadhvan port in Palghar district. Pawar announced that the port will be fully operational by 2030. With the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train station planned near this port, it is set to become a crucial logistics and trade center.
MMR to Become a $1.5 Trillion Economy by 2047
The Maharashtra Deputy CM emphasized that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is being developed as a major growth hub. The goal is to transform it into a $1.5 trillion economy by 2047, aligning with the national vision of Viksit Bharat. The new airport and infrastructure projects will play a key role in this development.
Improved Connectivity with Metro Expansion
To further boost transportation, Pawar announced a metro link connecting CSMIA and NMIA. This will provide seamless connectivity between Mumbai’s two airports, easing travel for passengers and reducing congestion on roads.
Night Landing Facility for Shirdi Airport
Another important announcement was the introduction of a night landing facility at Shirdi airport. This will allow flights to operate beyond daylight hours, improving accessibility for pilgrims and tourists visiting the region.
Conclusion
The Maharashtra government’s infrastructure push aims to strengthen Mumbai’s position as a global business hub. The new airport, metro expansions, and Vadhvan port development will enhance connectivity and economic growth, making Mumbai a future-ready city.
