Suburban Ridership Falls 1.71%

Mumbai’s suburban railway network recorded a notable decline in passenger traffic during the April-June quarter of 2026, losing 44.65 lakh riders compared with the same period last year.

Mumbai Suburban Railway Loses 44.65 Lakh Riders in Q1 as Metro Gains on Parallel Routes

Total suburban ridership fell from 26.04 crore passengers in April-June 2025 to 25.60 crore this year, marking a 1.71% decline. The drop comes as Mumbai’s expanding Metro network increasingly offers commuters an alternative on several corridors.

Western Railway’s internal analysis has identified Metro competition as one possible factor, particularly around the Borivali-Dahisar and Andheri stretches. However, the data does not establish that all the passengers lost by suburban trains directly shifted to the Metro.

Second and First Class Ridership Declines

The decline was most visible in conventional suburban services. Second Class passengers fell by around 3%, from 21.94 crore to 21.28 crore during the quarter.

First Class ridership declined even more sharply, falling 7.23% from 2.74 crore to 2.54 crore.

Several stations located close to Metro corridors recorded significant declines. Prabhadevi and Mahalaxmi, for instance, saw substantial drops in both journey and season ticket sales. Andheri also recorded lower First and Second Class journey ticket sales.

Metro Offers a New Alternative

Metro services running along parts of the suburban railway network recorded substantial passenger volumes during the quarter.

The Yellow and Red Metro corridors carried around 2.26 crore passengers between April and June, while the Aqua Line recorded approximately 1.65 crore rides. Together, these corridors accounted for about 3.91 crore rides.

The overlap is particularly significant because Metro services offer commuters alternatives on routes where suburban trains have traditionally dominated.

Still, the railway analysis cautions against treating Metro ridership as a direct replacement for the passengers lost by local trains. The available data does not track individual commuters across different transport systems.

AC Locals Buck the Trend

One of the most interesting trends is the sharp rise in AC suburban travel.

AC journey and season ticket passengers increased by nearly 30%, rising from 1.37 crore to 1.78 crore during the quarter. Several stations recorded particularly strong growth, including Lower Parel, Ram Mandir, Goregaon and Khar Road.

However, this increase does not necessarily mean the railway attracted an equivalent number of new passengers. Existing First or Second Class commuters could have upgraded to AC services.

Western Railway Plans More AC Services

The contrasting numbers have prompted Western Railway to push for faster expansion of AC suburban services. The internal analysis estimates that around 45,000 additional passengers are choosing AC EMU services every day.

For Mumbai’s transport system, the changing numbers could represent an important transition. Metro expansion is giving commuters more choices, while the railway remains the backbone of mass transit.

The challenge for Western Railway will be to retain passengers by improving comfort and convenience while ensuring that Mumbai’s growing Metro network works as a complement to, rather than simply a competitor against, the suburban railway.

Summary

Mumbai’s suburban railway lost 44.65 lakh passengers in the April-June 2026 quarter, with total ridership falling 1.71%. Metro competition may have contributed to the decline on overlapping routes, although a direct passenger shift cannot be established. At the same time, AC local travel surged nearly 30%, encouraging Western Railway to accelerate AC services as commuter preferences evolve.
