In a major step toward enhancing Mumbai’s metro infrastructure, the MMRDA has acquired 174 hectares of land in Mogharpada, Thane, to build the city’s largest integrated metro car depot. The facility will serve as the central hub for Metro Lines 4, 4A, 10, and 11, spanning 56 km from CSMT to Mira Road.

₹905 Crore Depot to Streamline Metro Operations
The ₹905 crore contract has been awarded to SEW–VSE JV, with construction set to begin immediately. The depot will feature:
- 64 stabling lines
- 20 maintenance lines
- Automated train wash systems
- Heavy maintenance bays
- Centralized control centers
The depot will play a crucial role in ensuring daily inspections, testing, and overhauls for metro trains, particularly during non-peak hours.
Supporting 12 Lakh Daily Commuters
Metro Lines 4 and 4A—from Wadala to Kasarvadavali and Gaimukh—are expected to serve over 12 lakh commuters daily, reducing travel time by up to 50%. Once complete, the Mogharpada depot will also cater to future lines 10 and 11, strengthening connectivity across the eastern suburbs of Mumbai and Thane.
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, MMRDA Commissioner, called the depot “a cornerstone in Mumbai’s journey toward a more connected and commuter-centric future.”
Farmer-First Model for Land Acquisition
To facilitate smooth land acquisition, MMRDA adopted a farmer-first model, inspired by CIDCO:
- 22.5% of the land to be returned to leaseholder farmers as developed plots
- 12.5% to encroachers, with roads and infrastructure
- Two public hearings were conducted with participation from local farmers and authorities
So far, 198 offer letters have been issued under this model.
A Milestone in Maharashtra’s Transit Vision
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis praised the acquisition, calling it a “landmark development” that fast-tracks sustainable and multimodal transport for Mumbai. With unified management, faster response to technical halts, and scalable design, the Mogharpada depot will be a game-changer for Mumbai’s expanding metro network.
