India’s premium rail tourism sector is getting another high-end makeover.
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has officially announced the launch of the upgraded Golden Chariot luxury train for the 2026-27 tourist season. The revamped train comes with redesigned interiors, modern onboard facilities, wellness services, and curated South India tourism experiences.

Known as one of India’s most luxurious trains, the Golden Chariot is designed to offer a palace-like travel experience while exploring historical, cultural, wildlife, and coastal destinations across South India.
The train combines old-world royal aesthetics with modern luxury hospitality features.
What Is New In The Upgraded Golden Chariot?
According to IRCTC, the train now includes:
- Refreshed cabins with plush interiors

- Enhanced dining experience
- Modern safety systems

- Spa and fitness facilities
The train also includes the Arogya Spa & Fitness Centre offering Ayurvedic therapies and wellness treatments during the journey.
Officials say the goal is to attract both luxury domestic travellers and international tourists looking for heritage tourism experiences inside India.
The Train Looks Like A Moving Luxury Hotel
The Golden Chariot is often compared to luxury palace hotels on wheels.
The train reportedly accommodates around 80 guests across 40 premium cabins, including:
- Double-bed cabins
- Twin-bed cabins
- Specially designed accessible cabins for differently-abled passengers
Luxury dining restaurants onboard include:
- Ruchi

There is also a lounge bar called Madira offering curated beverages and social spaces for guests.
The interiors reportedly feature polished wood finishes, elegant upholstery, and heritage-inspired décor based on South Indian dynasties.

The flagship “Pride of Karnataka” journey includes:

Experts say luxury trains like:

The government also sees luxury tourism as an important source of international tourism revenue.

Why Luxury Trains Fascinate Travellers
Luxury trains remain one of the most unique travel experiences globally because they combine:
- Slow travel
- Heritage exploration
- Premium hospitality
- Scenic journeys
- Cultural immersion
India is among the few countries that still operates multiple palace-style luxury trains inspired by royal heritage.
The Golden Chariot itself is inspired by the famous stone chariot at Hampi’s Vittala Temple and first began operations in 2008.
India Pushing Premium Tourism Experiences
The relaunch of the upgraded Golden Chariot reflects India’s broader push toward premium tourism infrastructure and experiential travel.
With growing global interest in:
- Heritage tourism
- Wellness tourism
- Luxury rail journeys
- Cultural travel experiences
IRCTC appears to be positioning the Golden Chariot as a flagship luxury tourism product capable of attracting affluent travellers from both India and abroad.
