It is said that almost 2 crores passengers travel by Indian Railways every day. People from all walks of life use trains as mode of transportation, from children to senior citizens.
Railways always try their best to take care of the needs of all passengers and the same is reflective in the nitty gritties in their operations. One such detail is the fact that the lower berth in railways are given to the senior citizens.
Securing Lower Berths on Indian Railways
This is to enhance the ease of travel and in case if you travel with Railways, you should know this.
Recently a passenger had said in a tweet that he had booked a train ticket for his uncle and had given priority to the lower berth because he had a problem in his legs, but even then the Railways gave him an upper berth. In a response, Railways said that if one books a ticket under general quota, one gets seat allotment only if there is a seat.
If there is no seat, then one doesn’t get it. However, if one books under Reservation Choice Book only if lower berth is allotted, then one will get lower berth.
Understanding Seat Allotment in Indian Railways
As per Railways, only when there are seats available, the seats are allotted to those booking under general quota. These seats are available on first come and first serve basis. There is no human interference in getting a seat in the general quota.
However, you can approach TTE for lower berth and negotiate for lower berth for yourself. If lower berth is available, then you will get it.
