Noida International Airport at Jewar was expected to offer NCR passengers a major alternative to Delhi’s crowded IGI Airport. However, early ticket prices released by IndiGo have surprised many travelers, with several routes reportedly costing more than equivalent flights operating from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI).

The issue has triggered debate around whether the newly launched airport can truly compete with IGI on affordability and convenience during its initial phase of operations.

Initial IndiGo Fares Trigger Passenger Reactions

According to reports, IndiGo’s opening fares on several major domestic routes from Jewar appeared higher compared to flights departing from Delhi IGI Airport. Passengers and local observers also pointed out that travel costs to reach the airport are currently significantly higher due to distance and limited public transport connectivity.

Some travelers argued that:

  • Airfares are higher on key routes
  • Taxi fares to Jewar are expensive
  • Metro connectivity is still unavailable
  • Overall travel cost becomes higher than IGI departures

Jewar Airport is located much farther from central Delhi compared to IGI Airport, making road travel costs an important factor for passengers.

Why Flights Could Initially Be More Expensive

Experts say several factors may explain the higher opening fares from Noida International Airport.

1. Limited Airline Competition

During the early operational phase, fewer airlines and limited flight frequencies naturally reduce price competition.

At IGI Airport:

  • Multiple airlines compete aggressively
  • High flight frequency allows dynamic pricing
  • Airlines optimize seat inventory better

Jewar Airport, meanwhile, is still gradually scaling operations.

2. Higher Operational Costs

Reports suggest airlines have raised concerns about operational expenses at the new airport.

These may include:

  • Airport handling charges
  • Initial infrastructure costs
  • Ground operations setup
  • Lower passenger load factors in early stages

Airlines typically spread such costs across ticket pricing during the launch phase of new airports.

3. Costly Last-Mile Connectivity

One major issue highlighted by passengers is transport connectivity.

Currently, most travelers depend on:

  • Taxis
  • Private cars
  • Road transport

Unlike IGI Airport, Jewar still lacks direct high-speed metro connectivity.

For many NCR passengers, taxi costs to Jewar may significantly increase total journey expenses even if airfares later become competitive.

Some Reports Say Fare Gap Is Narrowing

Interestingly, not all comparisons show major fare differences.

A recent report indicated that ticket prices between Noida Airport and Delhi IGI are now becoming broadly similar across multiple routes after initial concerns were raised publicly.

Experts say fare gaps may continue narrowing as:

  • More airlines start operations
  • Flight frequencies increase
  • Passenger traffic stabilizes
  • Competition intensifies

This is common during the launch phase of new airports globally.

Jewar Airport Is Still In Early Operational Phase

Noida International Airport officially began operations recently as part of NCR’s dual-airport strategy alongside IGI Airport. The first phase currently includes:

  • One runway
  • One passenger terminal
  • Capacity for around 12 million passengers annually

The airport is expected to expand significantly over the coming years and eventually become one of India’s largest aviation hubs.

Connectivity Could Become The Real Game Changer

A major factor determining Jewar Airport’s success may ultimately be transportation connectivity rather than ticket prices alone.

Several future projects are planned or proposed, including:

  • Metro rail connectivity
  • Rapid Rail links
  • Expressway expansion
  • High-speed regional transport integration

Once these links become operational, overall travel convenience and costs could improve substantially.

Airlines May Eventually Use Jewar To Reduce Congestion

Despite the current pricing concerns, analysts believe airlines will increasingly expand operations at Jewar because IGI Airport is approaching heavy congestion levels.

The airport could eventually become important for:

  • Budget carriers
  • Regional routes
  • Cargo operations
  • International expansion
  • NCR passenger overflow

As passenger volume rises and competition increases, airfare pricing dynamics may shift significantly over time.
