Indian Railways is moving closer to expanding its premium overnight rail network as the country’s second Vande Bharat Sleeper train has arrived in Bengaluru for final testing. The new train is expected to operate between KSR Bengaluru and Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), offering passengers a faster and more comfortable alternative for long-distance travel. The arrival of the train marks another important milestone in India’s efforts to modernise railway infrastructure and improve passenger experience.

Bengaluru-Mumbai Route Confirmed
The new Vande Bharat Sleeper train has been developed by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) using technology from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. Once operational, it will connect two of India’s most important economic centres—Bengaluru and Mumbai.
Railway officials have indicated that the train is undergoing final trials and approvals before commercial operations begin. The service is expected to improve connectivity for business travellers, professionals, students and tourists travelling between Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Designed for Overnight Travel
Unlike the existing Vande Bharat chair car services, the sleeper version has been specifically designed for long-distance overnight journeys. The train features fully air-conditioned coaches across First AC, Second AC and Third AC categories.
The 16-coach train can accommodate more than 800 passengers and includes modern amenities such as automatic doors, CCTV surveillance, bio-vacuum toilets, passenger information systems, charging points, reading lights and advanced safety systems. The train is also equipped with the Kavach train protection system to enhance operational safety.
Premium Comfort and Faster Journeys
Indian Railways aims to position the Vande Bharat Sleeper as a modern replacement for traditional overnight premium trains. Recent images of the First AC coach have drawn attention for their hotel-like interiors, upgraded berths and contemporary design.
The Bengaluru-Mumbai route is among the busiest rail corridors in the country, and the new service is expected to reduce travel time while offering a significantly improved passenger experience. Industry observers believe the train could become a preferred option for travellers seeking a balance between speed, comfort and affordability.
Part of a Larger Railway Modernisation Push
The launch forms part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to roll out more Vande Bharat Sleeper services across the country. Following the successful introduction of the first Vande Bharat Sleeper service earlier this year, authorities plan to expand the network to additional long-distance routes.
As testing progresses, passengers can expect further announcements regarding schedules, fares and operational timelines. The upcoming Bengaluru-Mumbai service is expected to play a key role in transforming overnight rail travel in India.
Summary
India’s second Vande Bharat Sleeper train has reached Bengaluru for final testing ahead of its launch on the Bengaluru-Mumbai route. Developed by BEML, the 16-coach train offers modern sleeper accommodations, advanced safety features and improved passenger comfort. The service is expected to enhance connectivity between Mumbai and Bengaluru while supporting Indian Railways’ broader railway modernisation and premium travel initiatives.
