Chennai: The much-anticipated launch of India’s first Vande Bharat train equipped with sleeper coaches is set for the end of this month. However, the train’s speed will be lower than initially planned, according to sources from the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO).
Modified Design Affects Speed
Originally designed for chair cars, the Vande Bharat train has been modified to include sleeper berths and additional water storage capacity. These changes have significantly increased the weight of the coaches, prompting a reduction in the maximum speed from the expected 180 km/h to 130 km/h. Senior officials from the Perambur Integral Coach Factory (ICF) confirmed this adjustment.
Testing and Certification in Progress
The RDSO is finalising procedures before the train undergoes inspection by the Railway Safety Commissioner. Simulated weight tests are being conducted using sandbags to replicate passenger loads. Following these tests, the train will undergo a trial run at its maximum achievable speed. Once all safety certifications are complete, the train will be handed over to Indian Railways.
Manufacturing Milestone
The sleeper coaches are being produced by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML). The first train was delivered on October 4, 2024, and the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) has spent the past three months preparing it for operation. In 2023, ICF subcontracted BEML to manufacture 10 Vande Bharat trains, each with 16 coaches, marking a significant milestone in India’s railway manufacturing capabilities.
What to Expect
While the addition of sleeper coaches is a notable development for the Vande Bharat series, the reduced speed highlights the challenges of balancing design modifications with operational efficiency. The launch represents a step forward in offering improved rail travel experiences for passengers across India.
Looking Ahead
As the train nears its launch date, railway enthusiasts and passengers alike are keenly awaiting its debut. With ongoing testing and safety clearances, the Vande Bharat sleeper train underscores India’s commitment to advancing its rail infrastructure while adapting to passenger needs.
