The Indian Railways is preparing to launch a super app by the end of December, aiming to simplify the travel experience for millions of commuters. Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and integrated with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), this comprehensive platform will bring together several services currently scattered across multiple apps and websites.
What Will the Super App Offer?
The new app will consolidate services that commuters presently access through different platforms. Among the key features expected are ticket booking (both passenger and platform), train status checks, food delivery, and customer support for complaints and suggestions. Currently, passengers use various apps such as:
- IRCTC Rail Connect: For reserved train ticket booking, modifications, and cancellations.
- IRCTC eCatering (Food on Track): To get food delivered directly to train seats.
- Rail Madad: For complaints and suggestions.
- UTS: For booking unreserved train tickets.
- National Train Enquiry System: For real-time train status updates.
By integrating these services into one app, the Indian Railways aims to enhance convenience and streamline operations for its users. IRCTC, with over 100 million downloads, remains the primary platform for reserved ticket booking. The super app is expected to further strengthen IRCTC’s reach and drive revenue growth through this unified system.
IRCTC and CRIS: Powering the Super App
IRCTC, serving as the interface between CRIS and passengers, will continue handling ticket bookings and act as the public-facing element of the super app. The Indian Railways views this new platform as an opportunity for greater revenue, especially given IRCTC’s strong earnings from ticketing, which contributed over 30% to its revenue of Rs 4,270.18 crore in 2023-24.
The role of CRIS, on the other hand, is to develop and maintain the backend software that will support the super app, building on its experience in managing key railway operations.
What Does This Mean for Passengers?
The launch of this super app marks a significant advancement in the Indian Railways’ efforts to modernize and digitize its services. Instead of navigating multiple apps, commuters will soon have a single, easy-to-use platform to book tickets, check train schedules, and access other essential services.
With a target launch set for December, the app is expected to simplify travel for millions of passengers and provide a seamless experience, from planning trips to ordering food and resolving issues, all in one place. This streamlined solution aims to make rail travel more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly for India’s growing base of rail commuters.
