Indian Railways has officially launched the new Rayagada Railway Division from June 1, marking a major administrative and infrastructure milestone for southern Odisha. The division, created under the East Coast Railway (ECoR) zone, is expected to strengthen railway connectivity, improve project execution, boost freight operations, and accelerate economic development across some of Odisha’s most underserved districts.

The move comes alongside the operationalisation of the new South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone headquartered in Visakhapatnam, which has led to a major reorganisation of railway administration in eastern India.
New Division Created From Waltair Reorganisation
The Rayagada Railway Division has been formed after restructuring portions of the erstwhile Waltair Division. While the truncated Waltair Division has been renamed as the Visakhapatnam Division under the new South Coast Railway zone, Rayagada will continue to function under the East Coast Railway zone.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the division headquarters in January 2025, and the new setup is now fully operational.
Railway officials say the new administrative structure will improve monitoring of railway projects, strengthen coordination with state governments and industries, and enable faster decision-making for regional railway development.
Six Odisha Districts To Benefit
The new division will serve six districts of Odisha:
- Rayagada
- Koraput
- Malkangiri
- Nabarangpur
- Gajapati
- Kandhamal
A total of 68 railway stations will fall under the division’s jurisdiction. The region has historically faced connectivity challenges despite being rich in minerals, forests, and industrial resources.
Officials believe the new division will bring railway administration closer to local needs and improve passenger services in southern Odisha.
Faster Railway Projects Worth ₹20,000 Crore
One of the biggest expected benefits is faster execution of railway infrastructure projects.
The Rayagada Division will oversee railway projects spanning nearly 1,360 km, with planned investments exceeding ₹20,000 crore. Railway authorities expect the dedicated division to improve project monitoring, reduce administrative delays, and speed up infrastructure expansion across the region.
Several railway lines in the area are strategically important for both passenger movement and freight transportation connecting Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
Freight Operations Expected To Grow
The division is also expected to become a major freight hub.
According to railway officials, annual freight loading is projected to exceed 40 million tonnes. Key commodities moving through the region include:
- Iron ore
- Alumina
- Bauxite
- Steel products
- Industrial raw materials
The mineral-rich Kirandul-Bacheli belt in neighbouring Chhattisgarh will continue to generate substantial freight traffic through the division.
Improved freight handling capacity could strengthen industrial growth, logistics infrastructure, and warehousing investments across southern Odisha.
Economic And Employment Opportunities
Railway authorities expect the division to generate wider economic benefits beyond transportation.
The establishment of a divisional headquarters is likely to increase demand for:
- Housing
- Education
- Healthcare
- Transportation services
- Commercial establishments
The division will initially be supported by around 40 officers and nearly 600 staff members, creating direct and indirect employment opportunities in the region.
Local businesses, contractors, service providers, and logistics operators are also expected to benefit from increased railway activity.
Strengthening Connectivity In Southern Odisha
The Rayagada Division is expected to improve passenger train operations and strengthen connectivity across tribal and remote regions of southern Odisha. Better railway management could support future expansion of train services, station upgrades, and infrastructure modernization.
Officials say the division represents a long-term effort to bring railway development closer to regions that have traditionally remained outside major transportation growth corridors.
Summary
The new Rayagada Railway Division under East Coast Railway became operational on June 1, serving six districts and 68 railway stations across southern Odisha. Created through the reorganisation of the former Waltair Division, the new division will oversee railway projects worth more than ₹20,000 crore, strengthen freight operations, improve passenger connectivity, and support economic growth through better railway administration and infrastructure development.
