Houthis Target Europe-Asia Data Cables
Yemen’s Houthi rebels are believed to have targeted and struck four different underwater fiber optic cables providing vital connectivity between Europe and Asia passing via the Red Sea over the last few months.
The disabled cables which experts estimate belong to established networks like AAE-1, Seacom and EIG, have resulted in communications taking a hit especially for countries like India and Gulf nations.
Attacks Continue Despite Western Action
The data cables attacks mark the latest incident in the Houthis’ months-long offensive against global trade and shipping lines through the narrow but critical Red Sea corridor that almost 10% of world trade flows through.
The US, UK and allies have undertaken recent deterrence actions against the Houthis through sanctions, seizures and even missile strikes. But the rebels seem unfazed as assaults using drones and projectiles continue.
Vital data networks between Europe and Asia disrupted
With the Houthis wanting greater control domestically against what they perceive as foreign interference and continuing the offensive, resolving the nearly 8-year conflict looks challenging despite global pressure. Yemen’s suffering populace pays the price for stalled peace efforts.
