Japan’s Hitachi Rail and Toshiba have officially unveiled Taiwan’s next-generation high-speed train, based on the advanced N700S Shinkansen platform. The new bullet train, called the N700ST, will operate on the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) network and is expected to significantly improve passenger capacity, comfort, and energy efficiency.

The newly unveiled train is derived from Japan’s famous N700S Shinkansen, one of the world’s most advanced high-speed train platforms. Taiwan had placed an order for 12 trainsets comprising 144 cars through the Hitachi Toshiba Supreme Consortium in a deal valued at around 124 billion yen.
The trains are designed to operate at speeds of up to 300 km/h and will run on the Taipei-to-Kaohsiung high-speed corridor. The project marks another major collaboration between Japan and Taiwan in railway technology.

Taiwan High Speed Rail says the new trains will boost peak travel capacity by nearly 25%, helping the network manage growing passenger demand. The operator has seen strong ridership growth in recent years, with daily passenger traffic crossing 200,000 travelers.
The N700ST trains feature redesigned interiors, quieter cabins, and improved seating comfort. Reports also mention smaller windows compared to current trains, helping reduce outside noise levels during high-speed operations.
Advanced Energy-Efficient Technology
One of the biggest highlights of the train is its energy-efficient design. The N700ST uses a compact traction system featuring silicon carbide (SiC) devices and a blower-less cooling system to improve efficiency and reduce power consumption.
The train will also include lithium-ion battery systems that can power the train at low speeds during emergencies or power outages, improving operational safety and reliability.
Delivery And Launch Timeline
The first N700ST trainset is expected to arrive in Taiwan in August 2026 for testing and inspections. Commercial passenger operations are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027.
