Bridging Cultures: The Potential Introduction of Hindi Language Studies in US Schools

Given President Biden’s favourable stance towards India and the upcoming presidential election, it is highly likely that he will approve this proposal. The plan aims to commence Hindi language studies in September of next year, with AS and IAI offering assistance in recruiting teachers and designing curriculum for the language courses.

Under the proposed system, students will have the option to select Hindi as a second language, following English, starting from primary classes. Hindi is the most widely spoken Indian language, with over nine lakh people out of approximately 4.5 million people of Indian origin in America using it as their primary language.

Currently, Hindi courses are only offered at the high school level in the US. Neil Makhija, the President of India Impact, expressed the belief that if children do not learn Hindi at the primary level, they may struggle to comprehend the language at higher levels.

What Could Learning Hindi Potentially Mean for US?

Learning Hindi can bring numerous benefits for US citizens. It enables cultural understanding, allowing individuals to delve into the rich heritage of India, encompassing traditions, literature, films, and music. It also opens up economic opportunities by facilitating better communication with Indian companies and entrepreneurs, contributing to sectors like international business, trade, and tourism.

Learning Hindi strengthens bilateral relations between the United States and India, fostering understanding and collaboration. Improved communication within local communities and a respect for linguistic diversity are additional advantages. Learning Hindi enhances cognitive abilities, problem-solving skills, and cross-cultural communication, opening doors to personal and professional growth in various fields.

Overall, it provides a gateway to a vibrant culture, economic opportunities, and deeper connections between the two nations.
