The European Food Safety Authority has found 467 Indian products unsafe which range from heavy metals like lead and mercury to high levels of pesticides and fungicides which include those banned for decades for affecting human health.
EU Regulatory Concerns Over 200 Products
In the attached list, you can see that there are over 200 of products that are found to have more than 1 active substance which are either banned in the European Union or is either restricted.
There are many that have been issued notice for the incorrect labelling, which basically means that the ingredients have not been declared. A strict stance was taken by EU on the labels to protect consumers from allergies.
Challenges in Quality Assurance Despite Government Standardization Efforts
For many years, the government has been trying an effort towards the standardization of the products. For example, packaging of edible oil has been made compulsory to ensure better information to consumers.
Despite these attempts, the experts have noted that these measures do not necessarily ensure quality especially when it comes to the contamination, in case, when the source itself is contaminated.
