India is facing a growing energy challenge—and the government has a surprisingly simple solution: use electricity before 5 PM.
Union minister Pralhad Joshi recently urged households and businesses to shift power usage to daytime hours, especially before sunset, to reduce dependence on imported fuels.
The logic is clear: electricity used before 5 PM is cheaper, cleaner, and largely powered by solar energy.
Why 5 PM Matters So Much
The entire strategy revolves around one critical shift—post-5 PM electricity becomes expensive and scarce.

During the day, India generates a surplus of solar power. But once the sun sets, that supply drops sharply, forcing the country to rely on fossil fuels like coal and imported gas.
“If usage is shifted before 5 PM… it will reduce imports significantly,” the minister emphasized.
In simple terms:
- Before 5 PM = abundant solar, low cost
- After 5 PM = high demand, expensive energy
The Global Trigger: Hormuz Crisis
This push isn’t happening in isolation. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route, has triggered one of the biggest energy supply disruptions in history.
With India importing nearly 89% of its crude oil, even minor disruptions can have massive ripple effects.
LPG shortages and rising oil prices have already started impacting supply chains and household energy access.
Changing How India Uses Power
The 5 PM strategy is part of a broader shift in how India consumes electricity:
- Charge EVs during the day
- Run appliances in sunlight hours
- Cook using electric devices instead of gas
This aligns consumption with solar generation, reducing reliance on costly evening power.
The Bigger Insight: Follow the Sun
India’s energy problem isn’t just about supply—it’s about timing.
Electricity demand peaks in the evening (5 PM–11 PM), when solar power disappears and the grid struggles to keep up.
By shifting demand earlier, India can flatten this peak and avoid expensive imports.
A Lifestyle Shift, Not Just Policy
This isn’t just a government directive—it’s a behavioral change.
If widely adopted, the “before 5 PM” habit could:
- Lower electricity bills
- Reduce fuel imports
- Boost renewable energy usage
- Improve grid stability
In many ways, India is being asked to rethink its daily routine around energy availability.
