Food delivery platform Zomato has suspended the delivery of non-vegetarian food items in various North Indian states on January 22nd. This follows government advisories issued in light of the consecration ceremonies around the iconic Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
Several users reported the absence of non-veg options on the Zomato app and raised queries online. Replying to one such customer query, Zomato’s support handle tweeted that as per government notice, it has disabled non-veg delivery in UP, Assam, Chhattisgarh, MP and Rajasthan states.
The move aligns with decisions taken by restaurants and meat shops in these states to serve only vegetarian fare on the day out of reverence towards the religious event.
Varun Khera, Head of National Restaurant Association of India’s UP chapter, affirmed eateries collectively agreeing to provide veg-only menus there respecting governmental protocols.
Similarly, some state Goverments had directed closure of all meat and liquor shops in the state on Jan 22nd underscoring the event’s significance. Many meat sellers preponed shutting down outlets to Jan 21st itself as maker of respect.
