Google Expands Retail Presence to India
Google is set to establish its first physical stores outside the United States, with planned locations in New Delhi and Mumbai. This marks a strategic shift as Google aims to strengthen its foothold in India’s growing premium smartphone market, where it competes with Apple.

Challenging Apple’s Retail Strategy
Apple has long leveraged its retail presence worldwide, operating over 500 stores globally, including two flagship outlets in Mumbai and New Delhi. By launching its own stores, Google is directly challenging Apple’s dominance in the premium smartphone segment.
Store Locations and Expansion Plans
The initial Google stores are expected to span around 15,000 square feet and could open within six months. While Bengaluru was initially considered, it is not a frontrunner at this stage. Google is also exploring Gurugram as a potential location, given its status as a hub for global corporations and luxury brands.
If these stores perform well, Google may further expand its retail presence across India.
Google’s Push in the Premium Smartphone Market
Despite its global influence, Google holds only a 2% share of India’s premium smartphone market (devices priced above $520), while Apple dominates with a 55% share. With its retail expansion and local manufacturing initiatives under “Make in India,” Google aims to strengthen its market position.
Regulatory Challenges and Leadership Changes
While Google is committed to its retail expansion, it faces regulatory and legal hurdles in India, including antitrust cases related to its in-app billing system and smart TV market dominance. Additionally, the recent resignation of its India head of public policy marks the second leadership departure in two years.
Future Outlook
Google’s decision to open physical stores in India signals a major shift in its retail strategy. While the company must navigate regulatory challenges, its expansion into brick-and-mortar retail could redefine its position in India’s premium smartphone space.
