Google Pay App Shutting Down in US, But Stays for India and Singapore Google has announced it will discontinue the Google Pay app in the United States starting June 4, 2024, merging all its payment features and offerings under the unified Google Wallet platform going ahead in the country. However, Google Pay will continue operations for India and Singapore markets.
Simplify US Payments Offering
The tech giant said shutting down the standalone Google Pay mobile app for the US aims to streamline its consumer payments experience there by transitioning the app’s capabilities into the all-in-one Google Wallet that combines tap-and-pay, transport cards, tickets, passes and more.
But it clarified that the hugely popular Google Pay service will remain fully functional in India and Singapore which will be unaffected by US changes, continuing additional region-specific features.
Transition Instructions
For US consumers, Google has advised shifting to adopting Google Wallet well before the June 4 deadline to avoid disruption of payment functionalities like contactless store payments, payment card storage and management.
Other Google Pay features like peer-to-peer transfers, gift cards or offers will eventually retire. The company has guided users to alternative options where eligible.
No Change for India, Singapore Users
Importantly, Google asserted nothing changes for millions of Google Pay consumers in India and Singapore, as it stays committed to investing in country-specific needs.
Indian users can continue enjoying full app capabilities around bills, peer transactions, merchant payments, ticketing across its huge existing base beyond the US transition that targets streamlining portfolio.
