The Railways and Karnataka government have launched a coordinated drive to remove garbage and construction debris dumped on railway land across Bengaluru. Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna has directed officials to complete the clean-up within the next two months while also introducing measures to prevent fresh dumping and protect railway property from encroachments.
The initiative brings together multiple civic agencies to tackle one of the city’s long-standing waste management challenges.
Joint Clean-Up Drive Across Bengaluru
During a high-level review meeting, V. Somanna and Karnataka’s Minister for Greater Bengaluru Development, Krishna Byre Gowda, assessed the growing problem of garbage and construction debris being illegally dumped on railway land.
Officials identified several locations where waste has accumulated over time, prompting the Railways to prepare a comprehensive action plan for clearing the affected areas within two months.
Strict Action Against Illegal Dumping
The Railways have warned that those found dumping garbage or construction debris on railway property will face legal action and financial penalties. Authorities also plan to identify and permanently close unauthorised access points that allow vehicles to dump waste onto railway land.
Officials said stricter enforcement is essential to prevent the problem from recurring after the clean-up is completed.
Waste Poses Safety Risks
Railway officials said illegal dumping is not merely an environmental concern but also a safety issue. Garbage heaps along railway tracks have, on several occasions, caught fire, damaging signalling equipment and electrical cables, leading to disruptions in railway operations.
Authorities also noted that repeated dumping gradually blurs railway boundaries, increasing the risk of encroachments on railway property.
Multiple Agencies To Work Together
The clean-up effort will involve close coordination between the Railways, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), BWSSB, BESCOM and other civic bodies. Officials have also committed to adopting scientific methods for waste disposal and improving long-term waste management practices.
Krishna Byre Gowda announced that a month-long cleanliness campaign will begin on August 1, complementing the railway land clean-up initiative.
Long-Term Prevention Measures
Beyond removing existing waste, authorities plan to implement preventive measures such as monitoring vulnerable locations, strengthening enforcement and increasing public awareness about illegal dumping.
The government hopes that sustained coordination between railway authorities and civic agencies will keep railway land clean while improving public safety and the city’s overall environment.
